Yosef is a freedman from first-century Rome. His wife dies in Emperor Nero’s jail after imprisonment for trumped-up crimes. Out of fear, Yosef flees to Jerusalem. Word comes that Nero and his mother, Agrippina, are pursuing him, believing Yosef harbors a lethal secret. Yosef returns to Rome, finding an unexpected ally in Agrippina. He brings his family home and marries Atia, a house servant.
He then discovers the lethal secret: Atia is Nero’s half-sister, surrendered at birth, and raised in Germania. Mother and daughter want to meet. Yosef and Atia join Agrippina on a boat ride near Misenum. Nero catches them. Atia escapes, but Yosef is shipped to the mines. Nero finds and enslaves Atia, unaware she’s his sister. From the mountains of Hispania to the royal kitchens of the palace, Yosef and Atia must try to reunite and somehow survive the relentless wrath of Nero’s imperial house.
