In famine-ravaged 1850s Ireland, Bridget—a determined young woman, educated beyond her social status—lives with her father and two brothers on a small tenant farm that provides them with just enough to keep the wolf from the door. When she meets and falls in love with enigmatic newcomer Declan, she soon learns that he is involved in a clandestine society and a plot to kill their ruthless landlord. She is willing to reveal her own secrets in order to join them in the fight for justice and a better life, but it’s her hunger for vengeance that truly drives her and draws her into a situation beyond her control. Marjie Thorne is a former print and radio journalist, published non-fiction writer, and author of The Green Ribbon, her debut historical novel. Born on St Patrick’s Day, she has had a lifelong affinity with Ireland. While watching a documentary in 2020, she learned of a secret society and its murderous plot in post-famine Ireland. The political and social similarities of that time to the apartheid-era South Africa she grew up in, resonated with her and inspired her first novel. Marjie now lives in a village near London with her husband. She enjoys travelling and using the languages she has learned.
