Jozef Zielinski falls in love with an ethnic Russian/Polish girl, Anastasia, whom he met in his home town of Kobryn. Their relationship deepens but their world is shattered when Germany and Russia attack Poland in September 1939. His mother hides near Vilnius, but his father is captured and executed in 1940. Jozef is distraught when he finds that Anastasia has been imprisoned and joins the partisans. He is determined to find her.

Lance Clarke is an ex-RAF Wing Commander who served briefly in the far east and mostly in Europe, in NATO. He left in 1996 and was a director/CEO of two large charities, then retired and travelled every year to the Balkans and Greece to support refugees. He has written nine books, including two anthologies of short stories. He lives in Upper Quinton, near Stratford upon Avon.
