A security consulting job for the Copa America international football competition is a chance to start afresh. But the problem in Venezuela isn’t hooligans, it’s political violence. As he uncovers a plot to overthrow the government, Niko realises that he is drawn as much to the action and risk in his work, as he is to doing the right thing. And when he sees an opportunity to take a haul of gold bullion, he takes it. A corrupt security officer kidnaps his partner. Niko rescues her and is taken to the president of Venezuela, who wants to thank him. Bit Players is what the The Night Manager might have turned out like if Carl Hiaasen had written it.
I am an education leader who has spent the last twenty years working for a cultural relations organisation in Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia. I spent six years in Venezuela around the period Bit Players is set, and I frequently return, as I am also married to a Venezuelan.
