What’s this?

Set in a corporate-run galaxy, this space opera explores agency of humans, aliens and artificial intelligence from dual POVs, security chief Kella and science officer Skyler. A merchant ship is touring the Fringe circuit in the 23rd century. On the captain’s death, Kella appropriates command from the first mate as the crew are beset by hallucinations and a murder. Ship owners confirm her as captain, but officers are bias against Fringees like herself with mods for high gravity. She tangles with the ship’s AI, corporate rules rife with catch-22s, and how to keep the crew safe as alien artifacts emerge. Fantasies distort judgement on board. Skyler faces the dilemma of seeing beyond her privileged class to help Kella track down the killer, and keep the ship flying. Devotees of The Expanse will resonate with Kella and Skyler as they grapple with moral choices in a chaotic universe.

As a lesbian who has devoured heavy-handed space opera all my life, I know that humans of every type and fabulous persuasion should be at the core of space adventure and struggles against the system. I wrote this story fueled by a deep need for laughter, tears and sheroes in this trying time. My first novel, it draws on academic foolery, bureaucracy and colonial attitudes observed as a professor working in the global south. I have published books on sustainability that have been translated into multiple languages. I know what it means to revise and rework, until the story emerges.
